Description
Word Maker is an activity I created to bring routine to working with word families. You can print the Word Maker pages and use it in your classroom, or you can have students work along with my video. Here is a video showing how to use the Word Maker program in your classroom. (This is a video showing the short a word patterns. This is a short o word pattern set.)
As you can see, you create one set of the onset cards and print out the rime pages. Students can combine the onset cards and rime pages to create words. They can then read or spell the words they make! Watch out for nonsense words! Just kidding – nonsense words give students great decoding practice too. Plus, they get the added challenge of identifying real words!
This is a fantastic activity for independent practice! You can also give the set to parent volunteers for small groups. The process is so simple, but it can be used with a variety of one-syllable words.
