Description
Do you need to teach your students about the suffix ion? This suffix -ion presentation takes care of two weeks of lesson plans!
Suffix -ION Presentation Daily Routine
Day 1: Introduce the function of suffixes. They change the meanings of words or give us more information about a word. This lesson is about the suffix -ion. Adding the suffix -ion changes a verb into a noun. For example, act becomes action. Today, you will only teach adding -ion to verbs that end in -ss or -t.
Day 2: You will follow the same routine as day 1, but you will introduce adding the suffix -ion to words that end in t + silent e. In this case, students drop the silent e and add -ion. For example, contaminate becomes contamination.
Day 3: You will follow the same routine as days 1 and 2, but you will introduce adding the suffix -ion to words that end in -ne, -ve, or -re. In this case, we drop the e and add -ation. For example, conserve becomes conservation. There are also some words were we just add -ation. For example, adapt becomes adaptation.
Day 4: You will follow the same routine as previous days, but you will introduce adding the suffix -ion as -ition. For example, compose becomes competition. Unfortunately, there isn’t a pattern for these words.
Day 5: You will follow the same routine as previous days, but you will introduce adding the suffix -ion when words end in -d or -de. In this case, drop the e and add -sion. For example, collide becomes collision.ย Also, if a word ends in -se making the /z/ sound, drop the e and add sion. For example, supervise becomes supervision.
Day 6: You will follow the same routine as previous days, but you will introduce adding the suffix -ion when words end in a short vowel + t. In this case, drop the t and add -ssion. For example, admit becomes admission.
Day 7: You will follow the same routine as previous days, but you will introduce adding the suffix -ion when words end a consonant + y. In this case, drop the y and add -ication. For example, classify becomes clssification.
Day 8: You will follow the same routine as previous days, but you will introduce adding the suffix -ion when there is no specific pattern. For example, subscribe becomes subscription.
Day 9: Review Day
Day 10: Review Day
Mixed Review: You will also get 25 mixed review slides to incorporate into later practice sessions.
Also, please note that this activity only includes examples of base word verbs becoming nouns. I do not cover nouns that end in the -ion suffix that do not stem from a base word. For example, nation is not included. Nation comes from a root that cannot stand on its own as a base word.
