Description
Do you need to teach your students about the suffix -ing for making progressive verbs? This suffix -ing presentation takes care of two weeks of lesson plans!
Suffix -ING Presentation Daily Routine
Day 1: Introduce the function of suffixes. They change the meanings of words or give us more information about a word. This lesson is about suffixes that turn simple verbs that tell an action happened one time into progressive verbs that tell that an action is continuous. This is the suffix -ing. Your students will see on the chart that there are many different ways to add the suffix -ing to verbs. You will only teach one spelling pattern each day. On the first day, you will only teach adding -ing. After teaching the spelling pattern to your students, you will give them the opportunity to practice spelling with the pattern. You will show a simple verb. Students will write the progressive version in their writing notebooks or on a whiteboard. You will then show the progressive verb, so they can check their work.
NOTE: All progressive verbs are in the present tense. We use helping verbs before the progressive verb to tell if it is a past, present, or future verb tense. If your students don’t know about helping verbs or simple verb tenses, you can click the links and check out those lessons.
Day 2 – 10: Each day, you will teach students a new pattern for adding the -ing suffix to words. You will follow the same pattern as Day 1, but students will also have review words from the previous day in their practice session. You will follow this same routine each day.
NOTE: Writing sentences will be especially helpful for these lessons because progressive verbs only make sense in the context of a sentence. This will also give your students practice working with helping verbs.
ANOTHER NOTE: There are multiple ways to use the suffix -ing. This lesson in only focusing on the progressive form of verbs.
Mixed Review: You will also get 25 mixed review slides to incorporate into later practice sessions.
