Decoding the Short E Sound

We have already learned that the letter e can make the short /e/ sound in closed syllables.

The letters ea can also make the short /e/ sound. This is a less common sound of the letters ea. A more common sound of the letters ea is the long /e/ sound.

The letters ai can make the short /e/ sound before the letter n. This is a case where the sound of the letters may be affected by your accent.

The letters ie can make the short /e/ sound. However, the only root word I could find that follows this pattern is friend. If you can find another one, let me know!
