Decoding the Long U VCE Syllable

A VCE syllable has a vowel-consonant-silent e pattern. The vowel makes its long sound because of the silent e. All of the vowels have VCE syllables. The Long U VCE Syllable is made with u – consonant – silent e.

Introducing the Long U VCE Syllable

Point to the VCE syllable making the long /u/ sound in each word. The goal of this activity is to help the nonreader make the connection between the letter and the sound it makes. A reader will need to read the word to the nonreader. More examples are in our Learning to Read workbook.

Practice the Long U VCE Syllable
