Like other letters in the English alphabet, the letter l can be silent. We have a specific lesson on silent l because the letter l is the least predictable silent letter. There are some guidelines for when the letter l is silent.
When the letter l comes after the letter a and before v, f, k, or m, the letter l is usually silent.
When the letter l comes between the letters ou and d, it is considered silent. In this program, we counted the letters oul as a spelling of the short /oo/ sound. Thinking of the letter l is silent is another way to think about that sound.
