Reading and Writing Superlative Adjectives

I started thinking about superlative adjectives as a part of a morphology routine. In Texas, second graders need to be able to write plural nouns, past tense verbs, verbs ending in -ing, and comparative and superlative adjectives. I have a slide routine where students are given a base word and have to add a prefix or suffix to change the meaning of the word. For example, the word panda would become pandas.

I created the superlative adjective slide routine with all of the different spelling rules students need to know. You can check out the videos below.

Then, I started thinking about how we use superlative adjectives. I wanted students to have examples of superlative adjectives because the more connections we can make to a topic, the more likely we are to understand it. I made some sentence slides to help students. You can check out the video of the slides below.

Then, I started thinking about getting students to write their own sentences with superlative adjectives. I created this presentation to get them started. There are ten questions. Each question slide is followed by a sentence starter slide. Some of the questions ask for opinions, so I included an additional slide that prompts students to explain their thinking. As you can see, all of your reading and writing practice is interconnected. As students are learning spelling and usage rules, they can also practice reading for comprehension and writing sentences.

The magic happens when you practice skills in a routine. It takes repeated practice to master any skill.
