If you have found this page, you already know about Engage New York Math. This is an amazing program created to teach all of the Common Core math standards from kindergarten through eighth grade. There are lots of things to love about Engage New York (also called Eureka Math.)
It covers all of the math standards.
It builds on previous lessons both throughout the year and from year to year.
It has a consistent lesson pattern with scripts for people new to the program.
It has lots of assessments built into the program.
It is free.
As much as there is to love about Engage New York, there are also some parts that are frustrating.
It can get boring for students (and teachers).
Sometimes there aren’t enough practice or processing opportunities for students.
Some of the lessons are confusing.
Most of the practice, assessments, and lessons are structured in the same way, so students don’t get multiple opportunities to explore the material.
It uses a lot of paper.
I first started working with Engage New York over ten years ago as a new teacher. I loved that it told me what to teach, but I didn’t always love how it told me to teach it. I started creating my own resources to supplement my instruction. People found out about my third grade resources and asked me to make them for other grades as well. I ended up covering first through fifth grade.
Engage New York Math is a free resource. They don’t even mind if you use the program to create new resources, but according to their copyright, you can’t charge for these resources. Following their rules, you can access any of the Engage New York Math resources I created for free.
