In teaching reading and writing, we want to be systematic and explicit. Unfortunately, for many of us, that means doing something we were never taught. Luckily, most teachers are excellent learners. Phonics has been new to me, and something I have spent a lot of time learning. Today, I am going to teach you what I have learned about the /aw/ sound.
AL: This is a less common way to spell the /aw/ sound. Examples: walk, talk, ball, hall
As with any skill, the more students practice, the stronger their neural connections! Spaced practice is the best kind of practice. That is one reason consistent reviewing is so important for students as they learn phonics. Words, especially multisyllabic words, often have multiple phonics patterns, so the more students learn, the more opportunities you have for review.
